Caption: The chief rabbi of Hamburg in 1628, Jacob Judah Leon (1602-1675)—known as Leon Templo—with the assistance of the Christian theologian Adam Boreel, built a model of the Temple based on the descriptions in the Hebrew Bible, the writings of Flavius Josephus and rabbinic literature. Leon also wrote a booklet on the subject in Spanish, Retrato del Templo de Selomo. Plate 47: ‘Solomon’s Temple’. This plate shows the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, Israel. Depicted are the Holy Temple, King Solomon’s palace, the City walls, the Antonius Fortress etc. The author of this work is the Lutheran German theologist Caspar Calvor (Hildesheim 1650 – 1725 Clausthal). He studied in Jena and Helmstedt. He became a Diakon in Zellerfeld and in 1684 Superintendent and Konsistorialrat. He frequently exchanged letters with important scientists like Leibniz a.o.
